I’ve finally ended my two and a half weeks of straight travel and am on the way home and could not be happier. This past week I flew out to New York for two days, flew back into Portland, spoke at two conferences in one day, and then drove back to Corvallis only to leave 24 hours later for a conference in San Francisco.

Here are the recaps from each venue:

New York - I got in at about 1 am in the morning, and realized that I had to catch a 5 am train for a meeting the next morning an hour and a half away. After finally getting to sleep, I slept for about half an hour until I was on the train out to Long Island. I got in at about 7 am, and sat in a McDonalds for another hour and a half until the credit union opened. Luckily the meeting went well, and I headed back into Manhattan. The next day Bernadette and I attended a photo shoot for an upcoming cover story, which turned out great and we flew out a few hours later. On the ride out I took some photos from the cab, and included one of them, which I think turned out pretty sick.

Portland - After a long day of flying, and being delayed on the runway for 2 hours while the JetBlue incident happened where the landing gear malfunctioned; I got into Portland at 1 am. Apparently I have a tendency for 1 am arrivals. The next day I spoke at two conferences, both of which went very well. I stayed in Portland until about midnight with the conference attendees and then drove home, finally able to sleep in my own bed. About 24 hours later it was time for a conference in San Francisco.

San Francisco - We made some good sales progress at the conference in San Francisco and met with a number of credit union partners and prospects. However, the one thing I get sick and tired of, are people who talk down to me. When checking into the conference, I was wearing jeans, a T-shirt, and a brass baseball hat. We still had to set up our booth, and when we checked in, the guy at the desk said that there was a CEO networking reception in the exhibit hall, “and that I might want to change.” Imagine the most sarcastic tone of voice you can imagine. I responded and told him, “Oh you mean jeans and a T-shirt isn’t acceptable? I figured I’d just wear this. Actually I spoke at this conference last year, so don’t worry.” Imagine my response being equally as sarcastic. It was an absolute joke. It’s a great idea to belittle people who are paying thousands of dollars to attend your conference?minus the great idea part.

On Sunday it was Tom’s birthday, and unfortunately I was sick and we weren’t really able to go out, which isn’t such a bad thing, because downtown San Francisco is probably the sketchiest place I have ever been. Instead, I was going to treat him to dinner on the top floor, 46 floors above ground. I took some pictures and included them below. However, by the time our reservation was up, it was the 4th quarter of Monday night football, so we chose to go down to the lobby bar and finish watching the game instead. We’re not really $30 a meal kinds of guys anyway.

The second to last day of the conference Tom and I went down to Fisherman’s Wharf where we looked out on the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, which I included a picture of as well. The highlight however, was an area where about 100 sea lions were sun bathing on floating docks in the water. We easily spent 20 minutes watching, as they barked at each other and would run and push each other off the docks, playing the sea lion version of ‘king of the mountain.’

Alright, the plane is landing, gotta jet. Get it, jet, plane…yes I know I’m a loser.

Check this out, during September and October I will have been out of town approximately 30 out of 60 days. It is insane. On Tuesday I flew back from Las Vegas and was picked up on the way to Tacoma, WA for a tradeshow, and then drove up to Seattle. Below are some notes from each place.

Las Vegas: We did a shoot for one of upcoming cover stories so I decided to do a little “research” at the texas hold ‘em no limit table. It is much different, and much riskier than fixed limit texas hold ‘em. You can lose a lot really quickly, which I did. However, the second day I won a big pot that made me break even for the trip. I called all in with 4 other people and had the best hand, it was a big rush.

However, in our interview with the cover story who I won’t disclose yet, one of his points was that all the good poker players you see on TV have to end up winning the money from other people. So if you think about it, all the money you see people making means that many people are losing that much also.

I also included a picture of the Gaming area in Caesars Palace where people bet on various sports. It was a great place to watch the opening night for Monday Night Football with the Falcons vs. Eagles.

Tacoma: The conference here went well, and we had some good conversations with current credit union partners as well as some that are in the planning process. However, Tacoma the town itself is incredibly trashy. I was not a fan. Furthermore, when I decided to go running, all the treadmills in the hotel were broken, so I decided to run up a hill, as the town sits on a hill. After five trips sprinting up the hill I was done. It was just as hard as running 4 or 5 miles and I was sore for days.

Seattle: I love this city. While it may be overcast, it may be glum, and it probably has one of the highest suicide rates in the country, it is still amazing. I met with a company that will go unnamed for right now, but they are located in a huge office, that was the former office a dot-com bust that raised $1 billion in financing from Bill Gates and Paul Allen to bring satellite internet to the public, but went bust. Needless to say it was an impressive facility.

From there we went to a meeting with our lawyer in downtown Seattle. I took a picture from their office located on the 41st floor. You can see downtown Seattle and the Space Needle.

That’s it for now. I fly to New York in 12 hours, and I should probably go book a hotel. I should have some sweet New York pics in a week. Until then…

Today’s first piece of advice: Never book an early morning flight after a Beaver home game, especially one in which we win by a field goal with just minutes to go in the game.

Yet that is exactly where I am, following the Beavs big win over Boise State yesterday, 30-27 in Corvallis. Being down the entire game, and then tying it up in the 4th quarter, we came back to kick the game winning field goal and sent the potato packing Broncos back to Boise. Man that was a good line.

In addition to an action packed game, Corvallis had quite possibly the strangest weather in a long while. A week ago everyone was wearing shorts and sandals, and in this game the clouds decided to open up beginning with rain, and then turning into pearl sized hail, although that is merely an assumption, as I’ve never actually held pearls. However, we did catch a couple of them, and posted them below in addition to a picture of the hail covered field.

Now I’m off to Las Vegas for a cover story photo shoot. It is just the beginning of 2 and a half long weeks. Here is my upcoming schedule.

  • 9/11-9/13- Las Vegas
  • 9/13-9/15- Tacoma
  • 9/15-9/16- Seattle
  • 9/19-9/21- New York City
  • 9/21-9/23- Portland
  • 9/24-9/27- San Francisco

And on top of that, I am in the process of buying a house which closes on the 28th which leads me to today’s second piece of advice: do not buy a house while you are out of town. It is unbelievable the amount of stuff you have to deal with, and the hoops you have to jump through. More to come next week after Vegas and Seattle.

We have been slammed this past week at the office. Between August and October most credit unions are doing their budgeting for 2006, so basically we have a two month window where we work like crazy, and if we do well, we’re set for next year. Easier said than done. We’re on the phone all day, cranking out proposals left and right, sending out tons of emails and the whole nine yards. Should be an interesting 2006.

On a different note, my buddy Rich, who also gathers stats for brass, came into town this weekend from New Jersey. He left Monday at 11 am, and got in Thursday at 1 pm. For some reason he decided to take a train out here-yes a train. To each their own I guess…actually I bet it was a cool experience. He then flew first class the way home.

We didn’t get out of the office until about 11:30 pm on Friday night, as we had to have something overnighted by the next day. We went out for a little bit, but Saturday was the big day so we took it pretty easy. Saturday was the Oregon State Beavers opening game in their brand new stadium. It was AWESOME! We got up at 11, and were over on campus by 12 for a 3 o’clock start time. I didn’t get a very good picture of the add-on, but I got a couple from the game. The first one is the opposite side of the stadium and the other is a shot of the stadium with the mountains in the back (I took this at Rich’s request, since he’s never seen mountains, only concrete because he’s from New Jersey).

It’s a crazy thing when the people you played football with in high school become the senior starters of college teams, or get drafted to the NFL. One guy we played against who was drafted this year, Bill Swancutt, absolutely destroyed us. He sacked our quarterback 5 times, and each time he would hover over the downed QB and go, “That’s 1!”

After the game, which the beavs won 41-14, we got some dinner, took a nap, and then rallied for someone’s 21er that night. We had a blast, and got some great pictures, but those are probably some that are best left unblogged.

Anybody have any exciting stories from this weekend? Catch any football games?
